Charlie Vergos’ Rendezvous is a legendary barbecue institution located at 52 S. Second Street in downtown Memphis. Established in 1948 by Charlie Vergos, the restaurant began as a small sandwich shop in the basement of a building. The discovery of a coal chute in the basement led to the creation of a unique charcoal grilling method for ribs, setting the foundation for what would become a Memphis culinary landmark.
Menu Highlights
Rendezvous is renowned for its Memphis-style dry ribs, which are seasoned with a distinctive Greek-inspired dry rub and cooked over charcoal. The menu features:
- Charcoal Pork Ribs: Available in small, large, or full slab portions, served with beans and slaw.
- Combination Plates: Options include pork ribs paired with shoulder, chicken breast, or brisket.
- Sandwiches: Choices such as pork shoulder, chopped chicken, and ham.
- Appetizers: Including cheese and sausage plates, barbecue nachos, and the Rendezvous Special featuring smoked sausage, ham, salami, cheddar cheese, pickles, and peppers.
- Sides: Traditional accompaniments like beans, mustard vinegar-based slaw, pickles, peppers, and potato salad.
Ambiance & Experience
The restaurant maintains its old-school charm with red-and-white checkered floors, vintage signage, and a cozy, no-frills atmosphere. Its location in a back alley, now named Charlie Vergos’ Rendezvous Alley, adds to the unique dining experience.
Legacy & Recognition
Charlie Vergos, a Greek immigrant and World War II veteran, was inducted posthumously into the Barbecue Hall of Fame in 2018 for his contributions to Memphis-style barbecue. His son, John Vergos, continues to operate the family business, ensuring the preservation of the original recipes and traditions.
